Exhaust systems/mufflers without approval

In Germany, there are strict regulations regarding the approval of exhaust systems for motorcycles, which are defined in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) and corresponding EU directives.

Exhaust systems without approval:In principle, it is not permitted to install an exhaust system without approval (e.g., without EU type approval or ABE) on a motorcycle. This applies to all motorcycles, regardless of their year of manufacture. The only exception concerns motorcycle models built before January 1, 1969, as different regulations may apply to these older vehicles. However, even these exhaust systems must comply with general noise protection and technical requirements.

Approval by an inspection authority:If an exhaust system does not have valid approval, an individual inspection by an authorized testing center (e.g., TÜV, Dekra) can be carried out. During this process, it is checked whether the exhaust meets the current noise limits and emission standards. This inspection involves costs and the approval is not guaranteed. Only if the exhaust meets all requirements can it be subsequently approved.

Summary: In Germany, motorcycles may generally not be operated on public roads with an exhaust system that does not have official approval, regardless of the year of manufacture. Retrospective approval is possible, but this must be confirmed by a recognized testing authority.

Note: Work on the entire vehicle must only be performed by a professional. If there are any deviations from the original manufacturer’s specifications, for safety reasons the TÜV must be consulted. When using add-on parts within the framework of the StVZO, existing laws regarding hazardous vehicle components in road traffic must be observed, and/or seek advice from the responsible registration or TÜV inspection center before installation.
