Notes for customizations
How do I find the right fender for my motorcycle tire?
No matter which project you are working on, whether Chopper, Bobber, Cafe Racer, Cruiser, Highnecker, Star Frame, Tracker, Scrambler, Brat Style, Dragster, Excavator, Chicano Style etc. the question for the fitting mudguard will come.
There are some questions that should be asked when choosing the right fender for customizing of your bike:
Flat or round? Flatfender means the fender is straight on the surface, D profile, similar to a car tire. Round mudguards have a round surface, C profile.
How's your fender going to be mounted?
Should it swing or be mounted rigidly?
To assemble a mudguard with swing means that it is fastened directly to the swingarm, struts are used for stabilization. The fender swings together with the swing arm so it can be mounted very close to the tire.
But even with this type of attachment, a distance to the tire must be maintained, since the tire inflates at a higher speed, or even stones go between the mudguard and tire. Most customizers use a rubber hose to fix in the middle of the tire. On that you can put the fender and adjust the attachment. The swinging mudguard fits perfectly with a solo seat.
For rigid mounting, the fender is not mounted on the swingarm, but directly on the frame, as on most motorcycle models supplied by factory. This type of assembly is used in many cafe racer motorcycles, or on custom bikes with cafe racer seats. With this type of mudguard attachment, the fender is mounted between the frame tubes above the tire. The fender then swings together with the frame, as a result a distance to the tire must be maintained, so that it can not hit the fender when the shock absorbers dip.
On this drawing you can see an explanation of the pictures that you can find on our fenders available in the shop. In order to find the right mudguard for your tire, you should take a closer look at the details on your tire to find the size it has.
Important, we give the dimensions of the wingspan of the mudguard, not the diameter!
The span is the length of the fender from one end to the other.
Diameter means: the largest distance in a circle. But since the mudguards are not always the length of a halfcircle, we specify the span.
Tire labeling:
Example:
If your bike has a 160mm wide tire, you should use at least a 160mm wide fender to cover the entire tire area.
Also, the diameter of the rim plays a role if its for example 15 inch you should use a 15 inch fender for mounting on the swingarm. But even with tires, depending on the manufacturer and tire type, there's a size difference. If you have a balloon tire you should take a bigger mudguard, because these tires are larger.
We hope these tips were of help.
